From that moment onward, it became known as San Antonio de los Alemanes.\nDedicated from its origins to Saint Anthony of Padua, the current building was erected starting in 1624, with several master builders of the era participating in its construction—including Pedro Sánchez, Francisco Seseña, and Juan Gómez de Mora. Its interior decoration was completed in several stages, involving a number of prominent painters of the time: Francisco Ricci, responsible for the architectural composition adorning the dome (a clear example of trompe-l’oeil); Francisco Carreño de Miranda, who painted Saint Anthony ascending toward the Virgin; and Lucas Jordán, who repainted the columns within the frescoes.\n\nNext, we will visit the Church of the Monastery of San Plácido.\nThis church, designed by architect Friar Lorenzo de San Nicolás, began construction in 1641 and was completed twenty years later. Inside, you will find an exquisite recumbent Christ by Gregorio Fernández; at one time, it also housed Velázquez’s crucified Christ, painted expressly for this church. In 1943, it was declared a National Monument.\nOne of San Plácido’s greatest treasures is its main altarpiece, featuring an Annunciation by Claudio Coello—who also signed two additional altarpieces located in the transept arms. The dome frescoes, those of the presbytery vaults, and those of the central nave likewise hold exceptional artistic value.
