In doing so, he followed a family tradition: his grandfather José and his father Federico de Madrazo had respectively studied in the Parisian *ateliers* of Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Unlike them, the third great representative of the most renowned Spanish painting dynasty of the nineteenth century never returned to Spain and instead developed his entire career between Paris and the United States, where he undertook several portrait *tournées* starting in 1897 while his role on the French art scene gradually diminished.\nIn Paris, he initially devoted himself to genre painting, producing works that achieved high market valuations internationally due to the meticulous detail of his luminous interiors and his exceptional skills as a colorist. Beginning in the mid-1870s, he progressively turned to portraiture—a genre in which he ultimately became one of the most sought-after portraitists among Parisian and American high society, who flocked to his elegant Parisian studio. During the 1870s and 1880s, he created several emblematic works in this genre, masterful examples of cosmopolitan refinement and precision.\nDiscredited by later artistic canons, **his work has remained unjustly overlooked by critics and art historians**.
