Step into the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) e. V. to co-shape the future through research and innovation! With the expertise and curiosity of our approximately 12\.000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure, we offer an exciting and inspiring work environment. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thereby contribute to solving global challenges. Would you like to tackle this major future challenge together with us? Then your place is with us! **Reference Number:** 4362 **Location:** Almeria **Start Date:** 01\.06\.2026 **Career Level:** Study \& Final Thesis **Employment Type:** Full-time; Part-time **Duration of Employment:** 6 months **Compensation:** Expense allowance of €450.00 when receiving ERASMUS\+ funding The Institute for Solar Research develops innovative technologies for utilizing solar energy. The focus lies on electricity generation as well as providing heat and fuels. The primary goal is to contribute to the thermal energy transition and reduce fossil fuel consumption using solar energy. What awaits you: Accurate cloud segmentation and classification is crucial for reliable forecasts of solar power generation and for optical satellite communications. The Institute for Solar Research is a leader in developing short-term cloud cover forecasts. To address the challenges of cloud analysis, machine learning methods have proven highly effective for automated detection and classification in high-resolution sky images. Nevertheless, significant challenges remain, particularly in multi-layered cloud scenarios and under nighttime conditions. You will work on questions related to the energy transition within a diverse and motivated team, thus actively contributing to climate protection. Simultaneously, you will collaborate closely with supervisors and colleagues to exchange ideas and solve challenges. Additionally, you will gain practical experience in machine learning, software development, automated testing, version control, and modern image processing. As a special feature, you will be based in Almería—one of Europe’s sunniest locations. Your tasks: * Conducting a comprehensive literature review on image and video segmentation/classification, data augmentation, synthetic image generation, and learning with limited annotated datasets. * Contributing to the development of a deep learning-based model for cloud detection and classification using infrared image data. * Further developing the training pipeline to reduce the need for manually annotated reference data, incorporating semi-supervised learning and synthetic data generation methods. * Assisting in the annotation of reference datasets. * Training and evaluating models for cloud detection and classification under both daytime and nighttime conditions. * Comparing (benchmarking) model performance against existing cloud detection methods and conducting a detailed performance analysis. * Documenting methodology and results in a well-structured master's thesis What you bring: * You are pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field and demonstrate strong academic performance. * Experience with Python and fundamental knowledge of machine learning. * Prior experience in data analysis, computer vision, and Git version control. * Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within an international team. * Very good command of English, both written and spoken. **What we offer you** DLR stands for diversity, appreciation, and equal treatment of all people. We promote self-responsible work and individual professional and personal development of our employees. For this purpose, numerous training and continuing education opportunities are available to you.
