Design scalable systems combining strong backend engineering with modern AI We’re looking for a **Senior Product Development AI Engineer** to join our Cortellis Drug Discovery Intelligence (CDDI) team in Barcelona, where you’ll work on high\-impact backend services enhanced with AI capabilities that power global pharmaceutical intelligence. In this role, you’ll take strong ownership of architecture and delivery while helping integrate AI\-driven features into a mature, mission\-critical platform. You’ll collaborate closely with distributed engineering teams to design scalable systems that combine strong backend engineering with modern AI approaches. Our CDDI platform delivers trusted insights that help life\-science companies make informed decisions across the drug development lifecycle. If you enjoy building scalable systems, applying AI in real\-world products, and solving complex data challenges, we’d love to speak with you. **About You – experience, education, skills, and accomplishments** * Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field * At least 6 years of professional experience building and maintaining scalable backend systems using Java and Node.js (or similar server\-side technologies) * At least 2–3 years of recent, hands\-on experience delivering AI\-powered features or applications in production environments * At least 2 years of practical experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs), AI services, or agentic workflows applied to real\-world use cases * At least 2 years of experience designing, testing, and improving reliable AI\-enabled systems, including handling model limitations, edge cases, and output quality * At least 3 years of experience delivering end\-to\-end product features—from initial concept and prototyping through to production—within cross\-functional engineering teams **It would be great if you also have . . .** * Familiarity with concepts such as **RAG, prompt design, or AI orchestration patterns** * Exposure to vector databases or AI\-related infrastructure * Experience mentoring engineers or contributing to technical direction * Hands on experience building and maintaining scalable backend systems using Python **What will you be doing in this role?** * Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs within microservices architecture * Build secure, high\-performance solutions using Java and Node.js. * Contribute to the design and implementation of **AI\-powered product features**, integrated into the CDI platform * Work on **AI\-enabled workflows and services**, ensuring reliability, scalability, and production readiness * Collaborate with product, engineering, and domain experts to identify where AI can bring meaningful value * Translate product and business requirements into robust technical solutions * Write clean, well\-tested, and well\-documented code following backend best practices * Troubleshoot, optimize, and maintain systems to ensure performance and reliability * Take ownership of technical decisions and actively contribute to architecture and design discussions **About the Team** You’ll join a team of engineers working across backends, frontends, and quality assurance. We follow an Agile delivery model and collaborate closely with business and product stakeholders to develop the Cortellis Drug Discovery Intelligence platform. Our work delivers structured, high\-value insights that support decision\-making across the pharmaceutical industry. As part of this team, you’ll help enhance the platform by combining strong engineering practices with modern AI\-driven capabilities. The team works closely with, and receives support from, several enabling functions such as DevOps, UX, AI Enablement, and Solution Analysis, ensuring a well\-rounded and scalable product development approach. **Hours of Work** This is a **full\-time, permanent position**, primarily working **core business hours in CET**, with flexibility to collaborate with teams as needed.
