Responsibilities: We have an excellent opportunity for a **Project Engineer** to join our expanding Waste Management team in Spain. This position is based at our Madrid office and operates under a hybrid model, combining regular office attendance with the flexibility to work from home. Working closely with the Waste Infrastructure Lead, the successful candidate will support the execution of a diverse portfolio of waste infrastructure projects across Europe, the UK, and the Middle East, as well as contribute to other waste consultancy projects. The role involves performing technical engineering and advisory work across all phases of the project lifecycle—from feasibility and conceptual development through tendering, design review, construction, and commissioning support. The selected candidate will also play a key role in project coordination, proposal preparation, and supporting the continued growth of KEO’s waste infrastructure capabilities. This is an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious engineer seeking exposure to consultancy work on major infrastructure developments related to waste treatment, recycling, resource recovery, and energy-from-waste facilities. The successful candidate will report directly to the Waste Infrastructure Lead and collaborate with the Waste Lead in Spain to support business development in the Spanish market—identifying clients and opportunities where KEO’s capabilities and portfolio can add value to the needs of Spain’s waste sector. Success in this role will involve: **Technical Execution** * Supporting the execution of waste infrastructure projects during feasibility, design, tendering, construction, and operations phases, as well as waste consultancy assignments. * Conducting technical assessments of waste treatment technologies, including thermal, mechanical, biological, and chemical processes. * Preparing technical reports, feasibility studies, due diligence reviews, alternative analyses, and business cases. * Collaborating on the development of Basis of Design (BoD) documents, process descriptions, material balances, technical specifications, and performance requirements. * Reviewing documentation submitted by contractors and technology suppliers and issuing technical recommendations. * Supporting waste characterization studies, facility assessments, operational reviews, and technology evaluations. * Collaborating on tender documentation preparation, including Client Requirements, technical annexes, and bid evaluation criteria. **Project Execution and Coordination** * Supporting Project Managers in planning and executing projects in accordance with schedule, budget, and quality requirements. * Coordinating multidisciplinary technical inputs from internal teams and external specialists. * Tracking actions, risks, deliverables, and project program activities. * Supporting client meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagement activities. * Collaborating on subcontractor and specialist technical advisor management. **Proposal Support and Business Development** * Supporting the preparation of technical and commercial proposals. * Developing methodologies, work plans, schedules, and resource plans for bids. * Preparing project references, success stories, and capability dossiers. * Contributing to market research and identification of opportunities within target sectors and geographies. * Supporting client presentations and business development activities. **Technical Excellence** * Staying current with advances in waste treatment technologies, circular economy initiatives, and regulatory requirements. * Contributing to continuous improvement of the Waste Management team’s technical standards, templates, and best practices. * Supporting knowledge sharing and collaboration among KEO’s international offices. Qualifications: To succeed in this opportunity, we expect your professional background to include: * A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. * Typically 2–5 years of relevant experience in waste management, environmental infrastructure, utilities, or industrial sectors. * Experience preparing technical reports and engineering studies. * Knowledge of waste treatment and resource recovery technologies. * Prior exposure to feasibility studies, due diligence work, or infrastructure development projects. * Strong analytical and technical writing skills. * Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. * A proactive and autonomous approach, with comfort assuming responsibility for tasks and working with limited supervision. * Flexibility to switch between diverse tasks and projects, adapting priorities to meet team and client needs. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and engineering calculation tools. * Good command of English, sufficient for working on international projects. * Fluent Spanish, sufficient for engaging with clients and stakeholders in the Spanish market. **Other Desirable Attributes** * Familiarity with Large Language Models (LLMs), including their applications and limitations, and ability to integrate them into workflows to improve efficiency—while maintaining appropriate technical oversight and judgment. * Willingness to travel, including assignments at client offices or construction sites as required by project needs. * Valid driver’s license to facilitate travel to project and client sites across Spain.
