This committed group works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services. As the Data Center Chief Engineer (CE), you will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center is operating at peak efficiency. This involves both planned preventative maintenance of equipment, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues. You will serves as an expert technical resource reporting to a site’s Data Center Facility Manager and interacting with onsite Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and any third party vendors. Being the singular focal point for all facility operations within a given data center, you will support Amazon within its owned and operated data centers. Data center equipment that supports mission\-critical servers must maintain better than 99\.999% uptime. As the Chief Engineer you will manage small\-to\-medium impacting projects from conception to completion. These projects involve large amounts of independent work as well as collaboration with external support groups including engineering, automation, processing, and finance in both local and global settings. Creating and delivering on key milestones, obtaining and tracking quotes for all necessary costs, and documenting project results for future implementation at other facilities. The goals of such projects are for the CE to drive innovation and resiliency while reducing operational costs in the facilities. One of the best parts to this role is that you will direct, train and support Engineering Operation Technicians in their role of providing hands\-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations. Implementation and execution of site/equipment\-specific training exercises is also expected. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, stand\-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPS’s, PDU’s, AHU’s, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFD’s, and building automation systems. A day in the life During each shift, you will lead a team, ensuring all members have the necessary materials and that everything functions perfectly. This involves supervising processes to ensure compliance with regulations and policies, as well as guaranteeing that appropriate preventive maintenance is performed to maximize equipment uptime. Based on your observations during shifts, you will propose improvements aimed at increasing the efficiency and productivity of our systems, and later implement these changes across all our EU centers. You will also use tools such as Scada to monitor processes and ensure their performance, while closely collaborating with your direct supervisor on administrative tasks. Your workplace will be at one of our operational centers. You will work in shifts, which may include some weekends and nights. About the team Our team of Maintenance and Reliability Engineers (RME) ensures our systems operate at full capacity. We are characterized by strong technical ability and excellent teamwork, led by experienced managers. Our work includes maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of equipment across our global network of distribution centers. The team includes leadership roles responsible for overseeing the development of fascinating technologies, some of which exist only at Amazon. Our team handles most technical aspects of Amazon, performing tasks ranging from installing automated packaging systems to overseeing general facility maintenance or repairing key distribution equipment. This includes adapting buildings to comply with current legislation, ensuring all personnel are safe and our facilities operate as efficiently as possible. Like other departments at Amazon, the RME team offers numerous opportunities for professional growth.
