Understanding these mechanisms is essential for explaining how adults acquire new languages, how multilinguals manage several linguistic systems, and why individuals differ so widely in learning outcomes. First, it characterizes individual linguistic experience through detailed measures of exposure, use, typological distance, and multilingual balance.
