Although it’s usually linked to language‑specific deficits, many stroke survivors also experience problems with memory, attention, and executive functions. These broader cognitive issues can influence rehabilitation outcomes more strongly than language abilities alone. Yet, how language and cognitive impairments interact—and how that interaction changes during recovery—remains unclear.\n\n\nWe track how language recovers after a stroke and examine how this recovery relates to core domain‑general cognitive functions, using behavioral, neuroimaging techniques, as well as state\\-of\\-the\\-art natural language processing methods. Our group has developed resources such as a lexical database of LSE (*lengua de signos española* – Spanish Sign Language), an on\\-line platform for presenting and collecting sign language video data, and a motion capture system for characterizing sign production. We combine behavioral measures with neuroimaging (fMRI) and neurophysiological (MEG and EEG) methods to capture language processing and reorganization across contexts.\n\n\n**Project summary:**\n\n\nMultilingualism has been associated with protective effects on health, including delaying dementia onset by several years, enhancing cognition in aging, and improving prognosis after brain injury. Yet its potential role in patients with brain tumors remains unexplored. This project investigates whether bilingualism can improve post\\-surgical outcomes in glioma patients. We will apply Artificial Intelligence—Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML)—to analyze patients’ natural speech, extracting acoustic and linguistic features and evaluating their prognostic value in predicting post\\-surgical outcomes. Using multimodal neuroimaging (MEG, fMRI), we will identify the neural correlates underlying the most predictive speech features. Speech samples will be collected from monolingual and bilingual glioma patients before surgery and 3, 6 and 12 months afterward to test whether bilingual experience enhances recovery and mitigates cognitive decline. The ultimate goal is to establish speech\\-derived features as low\\-cost, scalable prognostic indicators of cognitive trajectories, clarifying how bilingualism may buffer against post\\-surgical decline.\n\n\n**Job description**\n\n\nThe successful candidate will receive interdisciplinary training in theoretical language models, clinical approaches, AI methods (e.g., NLP), and neuroimaging, with opportunities to participate in network\\-wide events and international training activities. For example, we investigate how words are decoded, how new words are learned, and how components of words (segments like consonants and vowels) are processed by listeners. We use behavioral, eye\\-tracking, and electrophysiological (EEG) paradigms, while our group also has access to state\\-of\\-the\\-art neuroimaging equipment (https://www.bcbl.eu/en/infrastructure\\-equipment).\n\n\n**Project summary:**\n\n\nThe position is not linked to a specific project. The PhD student will have the opportunity to join an on\\-ongoing research line of the Spoken Language research group and/or develop a research project within the broader scope of the group research.
