Very close to Puerto del León, in the northeastern corner of the province of Ávila, lies the Sierra de Malagón and the summits of Cueva Valiente and Cabeza Líjar. For centuries, and due to its role as a natural pass through the Sierra de Guadarrama, these mountains have silently witnessed battles, bandits, and the passage of travelers—the most illustrious being the Archpriest of Hita, whose natural monument stands nearby, and the most quarrelsome, Juan Plaza, the bandit who roamed these mountains and used them as his hideout. Today’s route heads into the forest, ascending first to the summit of Cerro Valiente and then to the summit of Cueva Valiente, starting from the village of San Rafael—a beautiful spot nestled among granite cliffs and centuries-old pine trees. As expected, the views from the summits are magnificent, highlighting Peñota and the Siete Picos. Route length: 16 km; elevation gain: 668 meters. Intermediate Level. Departure and first meeting point at 08:30 hrs on Calle Fernando el Católico, corner of Calle de La Princesa (Arcos de Moncloa metro station: Moncloa).
